Many Hands Make Light Work

MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK

Area students gave back to their community by volunteering at Grace Resurrection Community Center Clothing Bank

24 local kids spent their Saturday morning working hard so others in our community can benefit.  Laura Hart, coordinator of the clothing bank at Grace Resurrection, simply put out the word that she needed some physical labor and the kids answered the call.  With the large amount of donated items delivered to the center, the boxes tend to accumulate quickly.  As we do each season in our own closets, the spring and summer clothing needed moved out and the fall and winter clothing needed moved in, and that’s exactly what the kids did…for four hours.

“Many hands make light work” was the perfect motto for the day.  With 24 kids working the entire morning, close to 100 boxes of clothes were hauled upstairs, emptied out, and either broken down or returned downstairs.  The clothes were unpacked, put on hangers, and hung in the appropriate section for style and size.  The kids put in over 75 man-hours of work - this was a huge benefit to the center as they needed to be ready for the Fall/Winter season.

Grace Resurrection offers gently used clothing free to the public.  The clothing bank is open on Thursdays and is located  on the corner of Boston and Water streets in Greenville.

The students volunteering their time were from a variety of community groups.  Some were participating in the Serve Darke County program and others were from Greenville High School in a variety of programs including Key Club, Medical Tech Prep, and Student Council.

Several programs/clubs at the Greenville High School require students to complete a certain number of community hours per month and of course community service is the main focus of the GHS Key Club led by president, Kent Holmes. Sue Huston, Career Development Coordinator for Greenville City School District worked with Laura Hart to coordinate the day and said,  “We are always looking for projects or areas where students can provide community service  -  if anyone would like to contact us with suggestions for volunteer hours, they can reach me at the high school by calling 548-4188 or by e-mail at shuston@greenville.k12.oh.us.”
