Boehner predicts a big night
By Bob Robinson
Sixty – plus or minus – excited supporters were on hand to greet the person they expect to be the next Speaker of the House… U.S. Congressman John Boehner.
They were looking for a positive, upbeat speech when Boehner arrived… and they weren’t disappointed.
“I’ve seen tremendous excitement in this campaign,” Boehner said, adding that the voters are going to be getting rid of Nancy Pelosi!
The crowd, gathered at Darke County Republican Headquarters on Friday, liked that.
“It’s going to be different,” Boehner said. “We’ve got the same big problems, adult challenges we have to face.
“It’s time to get serious about spending.”
He said they’ve been “kicking the can down the road” for years. “There’s no more road.”
Boehner added that Congress is broken. The people need real transparency. Accountability.
“It hasn’t happened in the 20 years I’ve been there… but the People’s House will start behaving like the People’s House.”
He said bills will be read before they are voted on and they’ll be broken down into manageable pieces.
“They might even be in English,” he quipped.
One supporter told Boehner that he wants the Republicans to cancel Obamacare when they take over. Another asked him how he felt about term limits.
“We already have term limits,” Boehner said. “They’re called elections.”
He said the people are tired of being disrespected by those in charge, alluding to the point that many of those in charge will be ‘term-limited’ out at the polls on Tuesday.
“It’s going to be a big night Tuesday. But we need to keep engaged after the election.”
He noted that the budget problem can be solved by two things: controlling spending and a healthy economy.
Boehner didn’t take questions from the press during the rally but responded to one afterwards.
Will the lame duck Congress deal with the impending tax increase before recessing for the year? No action means a huge tax hit on Jan. 1.
“Don’t worry about it,” Boehner said. “We will deal with it.”
Boehner spent time with his supporters before leaving, posing for pictures. Among those attending were State Representative Jim Zehringer, Republican candidate for State Senate Bill Beagle, County Commissioner Mike Rhoades, Republican candidate for commissioner Mike Stegall and Greenville Mayor Mike Bowers.
