Green Wave Third Graders miss Super Bowl win by shoestring

It was a 6-0 heartbreaker at Welcome Stadium in Dayton Sunday as a 15-0 Green Wave Third Grade football team took on the Kettering Firebirds for the Western Ohio Junior Football Conference championship.

In a game dominated primarily by the defense, the Firebirds scored on their first possession in the opening minutes of the game. The Green Wave held off the extra point conversion.

While the Firebirds - a team the Wave third graders had beaten in pre-season play - maintained the field advantage most of the game, the Wave defense consistently held them off. The Wave offense couldn’t seem to mount a strong attack until the fourth quarter, when two breakaway runs ended with shoestring tackles. The lone Wave penetration deep into Firebird territory was stopped at the 7-yard line.

The third graders finished a tremendous season as Super Bowl runners-up, 15-1, having defeated four playoff teams with a combined record of 37-1-2. Until today, the Wave post-season defense had been scored upon only once.

In true youth sports spirit, the third grade footballers and cheerleaders replaced tears of disappointment with laughter, pizza, games and pool at the Wagon Wheel in Greenville. They also received a free game of bowling courtesy of the bowling alley.
