First annual “Blues” event a success
More than 200 people gathered at Eagles Park Shade Road Friday evening to enjoy great food and a mixture of Blues and Rock from Ray Fuller & The Blues Rockers.
The event was sponsored by Darke County Center for the Arts (DCCA) and The Greenville Eagles. It was their first partnership at Shade Road and, according to organizers, is likely to become an annual event.
“We’re coming back next year,” said DCCA Artistic Director Keith Rawlins. “This is a beautiful facility with lots of space for this event to grow.”
DCCA Executive Director Julie Strait agreed, say the evening was well received by those who attended.
She said the Board of Directors discussed moving one of DCCA’s annual fundraisers to Shade Road due to Board Member Bob Robinson also being Secretary for the Greenville Eagles.
“We thought it would be a good match,” she said.
According to Kerry Young, Eagles Worthy Past President, there was discussion Friday with the Dayton Blues Society to plan a Blues Festival at the park in 2011.
Food was provided by Montage in Greenville. There was enough for all, but trips had to be made back into town for “refills” due to the turnout.
Robinson said that, once again, the parking lot was full by 7 p.m., with overflow parking on the grass.
Robinson added that all Eagles officers were involved in preparing Shade Road and getting the event together, but two individuals deserved special recognition.
“I’d like to thank Eagles Worthy Vice President Stephanie Baker, and especially Eagles Trustee Anna Humphrey. Without their efforts, it wouldn’t have happened.”
He also wanted to thank GHS Key Club members Claire Sherman, Lacy Hoehning, Natasha Swank and Nicole Noble for helping with the event and in the cleanup afterwards.
Ray Fuller and the Blues Rockers, a Columbus-based group, tours throughout Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.
DCCA has a variety of Arts programs it presents to the community each year, including its Artists Series, special performances, Family Theatre and Arts in Education. This coming year’s headliners include the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus and the sellout group, Riders in the Sky.
The Greenville Eagles is a Fraternal Organization that supports the community through a variety of events and donations. It provides scholarships to high school students, and supports organizations such as the Shriners Childrens Burn Hospital, various youth groups and the Darke County Humane Society.
The Eagles has been the sole funding source for the Greenville Fireworks Independence Day Celebrations for the past five years.
