New Majority Focuses on Listening to the People & Fighting For More Jobs, Stronger Economy
Last week the American people spoke clearly: they want a majority in Congress that listens and does something about cutting spending in Washington and helping to create an environment where we get jobs back in our country.
While the new Congress will not be sworn in until January, our work to build a better country and a more responsive government has already begun.
A transition team composed of new members and returning lawmaker has begun planning to implement A Pledge to America -- our new governing agenda which lays out a course that hasn't been tried in Washington before by either party. And on Friday, I outlined several steps that the next Speaker of the House should be prepared to take immediately to help restore trust and accountability in Congress:
No earmarks.
Let Americans read bills before they are brought to a vote.
No more "comprehensive" bills.
No more bills written behind closed doors in the speaker's office.
Next week lawmakers will return to Washington. As we continue to make plans for the new Congress, I will redouble my efforts to encourage President Obama and Democrats in Congress to work with Republicans to stop all the jobs-killing tax hikes from hitting families and small businesses on January 1.
The American people are demanding a fresh start in America. It's time for us to roll up our sleeves and get to work.
