Tom Niehaus, the New Richmond Republican set to become the most powerful man in the State Senate, said he would like to see slots at Ohio’s racetracks.
Niehaus, the presumptive Senate President, told Gongwer News Service: “We owe it to the voters of Ohio to review all revenue opportunities as part of the budget discussion and VLTs at tracks are one area that I certainly want to take a look at.”
Gongwer notes that “there has been speculation around Capitol Square that an executive order authorizing racetrack slots could come early in the Kasich administration.” A Kasich spokesman wouldn’t say what Kasich planned to do, saying he was still studying the isse.
The Strickland Administration estimated the VLT plan would generate about $933 million over the biennium, but the passage of the casino amendment would likely reduce the total.
