COLUMBUS — After 18 months in the double digits, Ohio’s unemployment rate dropped to 9.9 percent in October, the lowest it’s been since the March 2009 rate of 9.6 percent.
“The number of Ohioans with jobs increased in September, driving the unemployment rate down for the seventh consecutive month,” Douglas Lumpkin, director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, said Friday in a press release announcing the October rate.
The upswing was due to job gains in both the goods-producing and service-providing industries, Lumpkin said.
Employment increased by 8,400 over the month, from a revised 5,014,500 in September to 5,022,900 in October.
The number of workers unemployed in October was 588,000, down from 591,000 in September.
During the past 12 months, the number of unemployed has dropped by 50,000 from 638,000.
The October rate was down slightly from September’s 10 percent rate and down from 10.9 percent in October 2009.
During the 18 months of double-digit unemployment, the jobless rate peaked at 11 percent in March 2010.
The monthly report was the first since the Nov. 2 election, a campaign that focused on Ohio job losses and efforts to recharge the state’s slumping economy, dogged by the worst downturn since the Great Depression.
While the news was good, Ohio’s rate still topped the national unemployment rate for October, which at 9.6 percent was unchanged from September.
