A closely watched poll shows Ohio’s gubernatorial race is a virtual toss-up with a day to go before the election.
In a Quinnipiac University poll of 848 likely voters from Oct. 25 to Saturday, 47 percent said they would vote for Republican challenger John Kasich. Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland garnered 46 percent support in the poll, which has a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.
While Kasich entered the fall with a double-digit edge over Strickland, the race has continued to narrow to Monday’s dead-heat results. But both candidates enter the race with key advantages, Peter Brown, assistant director of Quinnipiac’s polling institute, said in a release.
“(Strickland) has momentum on his side,” he said. “John Kasich has the historical tendency of undecided voters to break against well-known incumbents at the very end of a campaign.”
The U.S. Senate race, meanwhile, remains strongly tilted toward a victory for Republican Rob Portman, who pulled in 56 percent support. That’s compared with 37 percent support for Democratic Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher.
