Report: Cordray among those considered for Ohio Supreme Court vacancy
Ohio Attorney General Rich Cordray may not let defeat in the Nov. 2 election stop him from holding a coveted statewide office.
According to report by the Columbus Biz Insider blog, the Grove City Democrat is rumored to be a leading candidate to fill the Ohio Supreme Court seat to be vacated by Republican Maureen O’Connor when she moves up to become the court’s chief justice Jan. 1. She easily defeated Democrat Eric Brown last week in the race for the court’s top position.
Lame duck Democrat Gov. Ted Strickland plans to appoint someone to O’Connor’s vacated seat before his term ends Jan. 9. She was elected to a six-year term in 2008, and O’Connor’s replacement would have to run for election in 2012 to serve the remaining two years of that term.
Cordray would appear to have the credentials to hold a seat on the state’s high court. An Oxford University scholar and graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, he argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court while in private practice. Besides serving as attorney general the past two years, his public-service resume includes stints as state treasurer, Franklin County treasurer and state representative.
Asked about his interest in a Supreme Court appointment, Cordray said he has not had time to think about it after what he described as a “long, hard-fought campaign.”
“I’m kind of exhausted and still coming up for air,” he said.
