Courthouse Expansion Project
Guest Opinion
At this moment I hold a copy of a letter dated July 28, 2009, between my thumb and trigger finger.
This letter is from Juvenile Judge Michael McClurg to the slow boys and one term Delaplane in the Darke County Commissioners office.
Judge McClurg at that date almost ten months ago informed them that he was withdrawing his support for the courthouse building project.
Judge McClurg stated that he would be pursuing the court staying in its present location. He said a court building should create a good impression for the County while not being too overboard in terms of design and decoration.
Judge McClurg continued by saying he started out asking for improvements to his building and the next thing he knew a new County building was being discussed.
This letter is absolute proof that this courthouse fiasco was not Judge McClurg’s idea. I wish to apologize to him for calling him an empty robe. We are down to one empty robe now and we all know who that is.
Maybe we could find a new location for the health department and let McClurg have the entire building he is in.
Folks we have to vote the skunks out of the Commissioners office. We need to be sure we never elect another slow boy with visions of grandeur to squander our tax dollars.
It doesn’t matter spit if you’re a Republican or Democrat in this small populated County of ours. We’re all in this together. We survive or fail together. No business or family can survive financially if more money is spent than earned. It is beyond me why everyone doesn’t understand this. Vote your personal pocketbook. Vote our beloved County’s pocketbook.
Stay tuned.

What are the stated reasons FOR a new courthouse?
Security, needed upgrades for the Juvenile facility and too much Municipal Court traffic for the third floor. We all agree these need to be addressed; we disagree that a new $9 plus million facility is the only answer.
If anyone looks at the plans it shows a large area just for the empty robe.
Entirely possible... can't remember if I've actually seen the planned layout.
Wow. Usually one would need to go all the way to an elementary school playground to find an opinion piece of this caliber! "Slow boys and one term Delaplane".....really? Did an actual adult write this?
Funny thing is, I don't see any actual, stated, thought-out, statistical, factual reasons for being against this project- other than, of course, a very clear personal dislike for the commissioners. I mean, what is the point beyond that?
I see: "What are the stated reasons FOR a new courthouse? " Which was not answered or addressed in any real way here. (no big surprise there)
What are the stated reasons AGAINST the courthouse renovations would be an equally valid question.
Try answering those questions- and be specific. Otherwise, this just feels like children stomping their feet and regurgitating rhetoric with no real substance.
That's MY opinion.
The short reasons FOR and AGAINST a new courthouse facility were stated above and don't need to be repeated. You can add we can't afford it to the mix. This has become an issue and will be discussed often in the coming months.
Maybe Darke should take a look at Greece. Spending like this proposed project is how they got where they are.
Maybe the U.S. should also.
