Key Club welcomes Mr. Mortensen

Two hundred and counting

Key Club service grows, and it welcomes its new faculty advisor, Mr. Mortensen

As summer approaches the highlight of the year – and the prelude to a new school year – the Greenville High School Key Club has already performed more than 200 hours of community service.
The “highlight,” of course is the Great Darke County Fair. Each year, the Key Club helps its sponsor organization, Greenville Kiwanis, work Gate 5 at the fair. The students will likely add another 100 to 150 hours of service over the course of the week.
More than 50 students have signed up over the summer. The club expects to continue growing when the fall semester starts and recruiting officially begins.
By statute of Key Club International, each local Key Club is supposed to have a Kiwanis advisor and a faculty advisor. Bob Robinson has been the Kiwanis advisor since the 2007-08 school year. This year, the club welcomes Chris Mortensen, GHS Principal, as its faculty advisor.
“This is great news,” Robinson said. “I’m not on campus daily, which is one of the reasons for a faculty advisor. The members need an adult they can interact with on a daily basis. Chris and I have worked well together on projects in the past… I’m looking forward to working with him to help the Key Club continue its growth.”
So far this summer, the club has helped the Greenville Eagles and Darke County Center for the Arts with its “Ribs & Blues” event at Shade Road, participated in the Annie Oakley Parade, held a fundraising car wash at Dave Knapp Ford and spent three weekends in a row working on Greenville Township’s Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Since 2007 the club has performed nearly 2,500 hours of community service.
Club officers are busy preparing for a variety of opportunities in the coming school year, including their annual support for Trick or Treat for FISH, bell ringing and Kiwanis’ annual pancake breakfast.
Officers for 2010-2011 are Kent Holmes, President, Angela Borgerding, Vice President, Claire Sherman, Treasurer, Prital Mehta, Secretary and Lacie Hoening, Reporter.
Also new for this school year is Greenville’s representation and leadership in Key Club International. GHS Junior Mariah Reitz will be serving as Division Three Lt. Governor, Ohio District.
