Guest Opinion - The Death of Dignity

The Death of Dignity

Sept. 16, 2010

After Tuesday’s final batch of primaries, the political lines for November have been drawn. The stage is set for the next two months of political wrangling, stump speeches, campaign stops, kissing babies and the occasional 15 second sound bite foul-up that will serve as fodder for late-night TV.
But, there was more. This 2010 primary season signaled the end of something that has been dying a slow, painful death as each political scandal and contested congressional race became one for the history books. From Charlie Crist, Lisa Murkowski, & most recently Mike Castle, the actions of these elected officials have dealt the deathblow. Dignity is dead.

Every kid wants an aquarium.  Even “grown-up kids”, especially if they never had one during their youth.  My experience began about five years ago with one little frog named “Froggie” and a bubble-eyed gold fish named “Eye-Gore.”

“Froggie’s” life ended after two days.  I forgot to feed him.  Eye-Gore lasted a little longer. His death came shortly after an injury sustained when his eye bubble got sucked into the filtration system of the aquarium tank.  His bubble popped!  A surgical procedure  performed by clipping the remains from his eye, a short prayer and a couple days in recovery ended when I discovered him floating.

To no one's surprise that reads this blog, I'm calling it for Kasich.
I actually expected a draw. It wasn't. Not by a longshot.
In fact, simply by staying on message, Kasich won.
It's amazing how simply discussing the problems Ohio faces while repeating the remedies you've proposed for its recovery can be so effective. While Strickland flailed, harping on the same old attacks we've seen in his negative ads, Kasich pounded away at the Governor for not taking responsibility the elected CEO of the state.

Debate Analysis: Heavy on attack, thin on details

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, challenger John Kasich go on attack in debate, go thin on policy details

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland and his Republican challenger John Kasich hurled at voters sharply different views of the Buckeye State, its government and policy prescriptions during their first debate Tuesday night.

The two men, who once walked the halls of Congress together, also lobbed a few insults at each other, mirroring the negative messages their campaigns and surrogates are pushing in television commercials.

From the Columbus Dispatch (Sept. 14)…
'Facts' cited in debate will bear watching
By Mark Niquette and Jim Siegel

Tonight's debate between Democrat Gov. Ted Strickland and Republican John Kasich could keep the fact-checkers busy, if last week's first-time meeting of the candidates is any indication.
Although Strickland didn't appear to make any glaring misstatements during a two-hour appearance with Kasich before the Dispatch editorial board Friday, Kasich cited several "facts" that were either wrong or misleading.
They included mistaking Steubenville for Youngstown in criticism of school funding, using budget figures in a questionable way and assigning untrue motives for an Ohio company's move to Indiana.

Adams awarded Watchdog Award

Rep. Richard Adams Honored with Watchdog of the Treasury Award

Columbus—State Representative Richard Adams (R-Troy) today accepted the “Watchdog of the Treasury” award from the United Conservatives of Ohio. The award is presented to public officials who demonstrate a commitment to limited government, lower taxes, regulatory relief, and individual liberty.

“I’m honored that the United Conservatives of Ohio has recognized me as a responsible steward of the taxpayers’ dollars,” Rep. Adams said. “I will continue to work hard to protect Ohio’s citizens through a more accountable state government.”

The United Conservatives of Ohio supports responsible spending of the taxpayers’ dollars, the elimination of government waste, and free-market economics.

Special Opinion - Truly Blessed

When I was young and stupid, I was always in overdrive, moving from one potential catastrophe to the next. I had no thought of where I’d been or what I’d been doing, and didn’t have a clue where I was going. Nor did I care.
Now that I’m in my “golden years” I often find myself thinking back over those times… some good, most not so good, and wonder how the heck I ever managed to get beyond my twenties.
God was watching over me… I had no clue why, I just realized at some point that He was.

From Rasmussen Reports…
Gangster Government Stifles Criticism of Obamacare
Washington Examiner columnist, Michael Barone

"There will be zero tolerance for this type of misinformation and unjustified rate increases." That sounds like a stern headmistress dressing down some sophomores who have been misbehaving. But it's actually from a letter sent Thursday from Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to Karen Ignagni, president of America's Health Insurance Plans -- the chief lobbyist for private health insurance companies.
Sebelius objects to claims by health insurers that they are raising premiums because of increased costs imposed by the Obamacare law passed by Congress last March.

From Newsmax
John Podesta, who led Barack Obama’s presidential transition team, predicts there will be changes in the White House after expected Democratic losses in the midterm elections and some “soul-searching.”
“After November, you’ll see some soul-searching and some changes particularly in the way [Obama has] talked to the American people and really communicated, particularly, I think with the business community,” Podesta, president of the Center for American Progress and formerly Bill Clinton’s White House chief of staff, told MSNBC on Tuesday.
