House Rules Package is a Nice First Step to Control Spending

Just before the holidays, House Republican leaders released their proposed “rules” package for the next Congress. It will be considered first on January 4th by House Republicans alone, and then thereafter by the full House of Representatives. Since the House is not a continuing body (like the Senate), it must adopt a new set of rules and procedures every two years when a new Congress is sworn in.

The preceding congressional session with Democrats controlling both the Senate and the House closed its doors just before Christmas, with voters as critical of it as they have been for months.

So now, the Environmental Protection Agency and Interior Department intend to impose costly, job-killing, economy-strangling new rules for power plants and refineries, and implement more land-grabs that will lock up additional millions of acres and more billions of dollars of American energy.

The moral of this column is that in today's world, cartoons, if they target Islam, can be more hazardous to your health than crossing the mighty U.S. government and its allies.

Americans expected the current year to be better than it turned out but are more hopeful about the year to come. This is similar to findings in previous years. Still, adults are less optimistic about the upcoming year than they’ve been in the previous seven years of surveying.
